Data Shorts: KKR's top-order returns remain low despite Finn Allen's surge

KKR's openers have collectively aggregated 587 runs at 26.68 in IPL 2026 – the lowest by a fair distance – and almost half of GT's 1123. All of that despite Finn Allen's blistering knocks since his comeback to the XI, the recent one setting up a crucial win with two more home games to go.

Team-wise contribution by openers in IPL 2026

Team Mat Runs Ave SR 50s 100s
GT 13 1123 44.92 158.39 11 1
MI 12 879 41.85 175.09 4 2
SRH 12 842 36.6 190.92 5 1
PBKS 12 803 38.23 188.49 8 0
LSG 12 800 33.33 156.55 3 1
RCB 12 771 36.71 159.95 5 1
DC 12 760 33.04 168.51 5 1
CSK 12 756 39.78 145.66 3 2
RR 11 755 37.75 195.59 5 1
KKR 12 587 26.68 167.71 2 1

Remove Allen's numbers since his comeback in May, and those read: 347 runs at 18.26 (SR: 140.5). In KKR's victorious 2024 run, the Phil Salt-Sunil Narine pairing was formidable. They've struggled since letting Salt go, with average opening partnerships of 24.33 (10th) and 10.18 (6th) in 2026.

KKR preferred Allen over Tim Seifert to start with, justified by Seifert's stellar buildup including a whirlwind century in the T20 World Cup semifinal at Eden Gardens. Between January 2025 and IPL 2026 start, Seifert aggregated 2197 T20 runs at 149.96 strike-rate. Allen's 1655 came at 196.32. KKR, after a winless run and Allen's underwhelming results, tried Seifert (19 runs across three innings, two ducks) and also experimented with Narine as Allen's opening partner.

KKR's first two wins, courtesy of Rinku Singh's brilliance, masked the struggles at the top before Allen returned. His elite boundary hitting makes him the best fit given KKR's setup and home conditions.

Of 98 batters facing at least 100 balls in this timeframe, Allen tops strike-rate. His boundary percentage is bettered only by Abhishek Sharma (33.77%) and Ishan Kishan (31.94%). No one has hit more sixes – one every six balls, compared to all openers combined hitting one every 17 balls.

He has amassed 1976 runs from 58 innings at a strike-rate of 200 since January 2025. This adds value given Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi's shortcomings – Rahane's IPL strike-rate since 2023 is 122.46 against spin versus 160.08 against quicks; Raghuvanshi's corresponding numbers are 134.9 and 153.25.

16-20 27 13 9 207.69 30.76

With 10 more games to go, KKR are hanging in the playoff race. Even if they miss out, they may have found an answer to at least one missing puzzle for the next edition.
