Suryakumar intrigue grows as MI brace for season review with Hardik

A veil of mystery surrounds Suryakumar Yadav after a follow-unfollow-refollow saga involving Mumbai Indians on social media. He has deleted pictures related to the franchise and follows MI but not skipper Hardik Pandya. The developments may stem from frustration over being stripped of India's T20I captaincy.

With chief selector Ajit Agarkar recently hinting that Shreyas Iyer was appointed T20I captain with the 2028 Olympics and next T20 World Cup in mind, Suryakumar's return to the national side looks increasingly difficult given the depth of performers waiting. His MI future appears secure for now with no immediate indication of release or trade.

Something may be brewing around Hardik Pandya. Cricbuzz understands the franchise recognizes thorough introspection is required. "There is no panic. The franchise will regroup and reflect on the season," said a source.

MI avoided last place only by better net run rate after a season of despair with three captains (including Suryakumar and Jasprit Bumrah), a record 24 players used, and questionable selection and tactical calls. The franchise is expected to sit down with Hardik, brought in from Gujarat Titans three seasons ago. MI hasn't won an IPL title since 2020 and under Hardik has managed just 38% win percentage – 15 wins and 24 defeats in 39 matches since 2024.

A meeting between management and Hardik will discuss the way forward. Sources said decisions will be made in the interest of both parties, whether that means retention, release or trade. Hardik is currently preparing for the ODI series against Afghanistan and will not be disturbed.

There has been speculation about a possible trade but no formal approach from any franchise yet, though several teams have indicated openness to considering the 32-year-old all-rounder.
