Matt Henry's 11-wicket match haul powers New Zealand to 253-run win over England

New Zealand tour of England, 2026

Matt Henry needed just 31 deliveries on the fifth morning to claim the remaining five England wickets, recording the best match figures of his Test career as New Zealand sealed a commanding 253-run victory in the second Test at The Oval.

The collapse began with the prized scalp of Joe Root. Henry, who troubled the stand-in skipper throughout, produced a delivery that jagged back from a good length and trapped him lbw for the second time in the match. Root's dismissal for 77 ended England's hopes of chasing down the target.

A couple of balls later, Jofra Archer had his stumps rattled by a delivery that kept low on the wearing fifth-day surface.

Henry followed up his double-wicket maiden with another – Matthew Fisher chopped on, while Josh Tongue edged one that held its line to first slip, completing Henry's maiden ten-wicket match haul in Test cricket.

Fittingly, Henry took the final wicket – Jordan Cox attempted to sweep but was beaten by a yorker that crashed into the base of the stumps as England were bowled out for 209 in 58.1 overs. Henry claimed 5 for 3 in the short morning session, finishing with career-best match figures of 11 for 109.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 391 & 362 beat England 291 & 209 (Joe Root 77; Matt Henry 6-29) by 253 runs
