Seventeen years on, Harmanpreet stands alone at 200 T20Is

On Sunday at Old Trafford, Harmanpreet Kaur will play her 200th T20I, a landmark that speaks to her longevity and how closely her career has tracked the evolution of women's cricket in India.

The milestone comes in a T20 World Cup fixture, the tournament where the world first saw Harmanpreet at the inaugural edition in 2009. India take on South Africa, the team against whom she led India to ODI World Cup glory just eight months ago.

When she debuted, international fixtures received little attention, professional opportunities were limited, and many structures supporting the women's game were years away. Seventeen years later, Harmanpreet will become the first cricketer, male or female, to reach 200 T20 internationals.

Questions about retirement have surfaced, but Harmanpreet has shown little inclination to entertain them. Her influence on the side remains undiminished.

India's bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi: "Harman is a top-level athlete. She's a role model for almost all cricketers globally. The way she has conducted herself over the years… She's playing her 200th T20, that's a big thing. She shares a lot of experience with the youngsters. Those minor points she shares actually help boost the careers of a lot of youngsters."

Her unbeaten 171 against Australia in the 2017 ODI World Cup semifinal remains one of the most transformative innings in Indian cricket.

South Africa allrounder Chloe Tryon: "200 games is a lot. She makes it sound easy. She's been a role model for so many people around the world. Hopefully she has 200 more. It's great to see how the women's game has grown and how she's taken the game forward."

The milestone arrives with India chasing a place in the knockout stages. Sunday's clash against South Africa could determine that outcome, lending even greater significance to an already historic occasion.
