Aminul Islam asks ICC to freeze BCB funding

Aminul Islam Bulbul has urged the International Cricket Council (ICC) to freeze funding for the Bangladesh Cricket Board, a BCB source confirmed to Cricbuzz on Thursday.

Aminul, the former BCB president, sent a near 14-page letter to the ICC earlier this week questioning the board's legality. He demanded reinstatement as board president and requested the ICC withhold financial assistance to the BCB.

"Yes, he requested ICC to freeze their funding for Bangladesh," the source confirmed, adding that the ICC notified BCB about the letter. The BCB replied to the ICC after consulting its legal team. Aminul could not be reached for comment.

The National Sports Council dissolved the previous Aminul-led board on April 7 over alleged irregularities in the last board election, following a probe committee report. Former national skipper Tamim Iqbal was appointed head of an 11-member ad-hoc committee tasked with holding an election within 90 days.

The election was held on June 7, with Tamim elected BCB president unopposed for a four-year term. The election followed the Bangladesh government's intervention after a probe found Aminul and his board members involved in corruption.

Aminul replaced Faruque Ahmed as BCB president on May 30, 2025 after the NSC removed Faruque. Faruque had taken over in August 2024 following the exit of long-serving president Nazmul Hasan, who went into hiding after the July student movement ousted the Awami League government.

Aminul, previously an ICC development officer, was approached by the former Yunus-led government to return to Bangladesh for a transparent election. He initially planned to return to the ICC after the election but changed his mind, citing unfinished work. He was later removed as president on corruption charges following allegations after the February general election.
