England, India and the long road to a Lord's first

Lord's will host its first women's Test match in 2026 – 142 years and 150 men's Tests since the venue opened. England face India in a four-day encounter at the historic ground.

The MCC was a men-only establishment for over two centuries, only opening female membership in 1998 after a two-thirds majority vote. In 1986, India captain Diana Edulji and her team were barred from entering the Lord's Pavilion, with Edulji calling the MCC "male chauvinist pigs".

Jemimah Rodrigues called it "a very emotional moment", while Harmanpreet Kaur said "playing at Lord's is one of the dreams".

Match context

England arrive days after their T20 World Cup exit. India have had time to process their early tournament departure, with 2026 bringing disappointment across formats after their World Cup triumph.

India's Test record is formidable – their loss to Australia in Perth was their first since 2006. They've beaten England, Australia and South Asia at home by 347 runs, 8 wickets and 10 wickets respectively. India have lost only one Test to England – back in 1995.

Team news

India: Spin options between Sneh Rana (who saved the Bristol Test) and Shree Charani (14 wickets in the World Cup). Pace attack features Renuka Singh Thakur, Sayali Satghare, and Kranti Gaud.

England: Nat Sciver-Brunt leads in a Test for the first time. Five players uncapped in the format replace Danni Wyatt-Hodge, Kate Cross, and Charlie Dean. Grace Potts and Mady Villiers could debut. Alice Capsey may play her first Test after 36 ODIs and 58 T20Is.

England's pace attack features Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer, who bowls above 120 kph.

Tammy Beaumont will retire at the end of the Test, concluding a 17-year international career.

Pitch concerns

The men's Test between England and New Zealand last month was the second-shortest at Lord's (166 overs), with inconsistent bounce.

Attendance record

The Ashes Test at the MCG drew 35,365 – the previous highest was 23,207 at Trent Bridge in 2023. A strong turnout for this match would be significant for women's Test cricket.
