Ten Doeschate seeks India exit; Gambhir yet to sign off
Ryan ten Doeschate is contemplating moving on from the Indian team. If he receives the go-ahead from the BCCI and head coach Gautam Gambhir, July 19 – the day of the third ODI against England – could mark his final day in the Indian dressing room.
Cricbuzz understands he has informed the BCCI of his desire to leave and requested to be relieved. Multiple reasons are behind his decision, none related to job dissatisfaction. The parting is expected to be amicable.
Ten Doeschate, a former Netherlands international, joined the Indian team two years ago and has now completed his initial contract with the BCCI. With the team on tour in England, he may seek immediate release after the third ODI at Lord's.
He wants to move on for purely personal reasons – with three young sons needing his attention, particularly as his wife works, he wants to devote more time to his family in London. The extensive travel with the India job is a factor, and he is looking for a role with less travel.
As an assistant coach, his role may lack complete clarity. His core expertise is fielding, but with T Dilip already serving as fielding coach, ten Doeschate's contribution in that area may be limited.
Ten Doeschate shares a close rapport with Gambhir, who recommended his name to the BCCI after taking over as head coach. Gambhir relies heavily on him on several fronts, and there remains a possibility that the head coach could veto his resignation.
