ECB investigating incident after Brydon Carse seen in handcuffs outside nightclub

England fast bowler Brydon Carse was seen in handcuffs outside a nightclub in Derby on Saturday night, prompting an investigation from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Video footage circulating on social media shows Carse surrounded by police officers outside the venue. England team-mate Matthew Potts and former captain Ben Stokes are also visible in the footage.

It is not clear what led to the incident or why Carse was placed in handcuffs. The 31-year-old was not selected for England's first Test against Pakistan at Headingley and was released by the ECB to play for Durham in the County Championship. He remains part of England's squad for the second Test at Lord's, which begins on Thursday.

"We are aware of an incident which is reported to have taken place in Derby last night, and are currently investigating," an ECB spokesperson said. "We will provide a further update when possible."

The incident comes amid renewed scrutiny of England's approach to alcohol and player conduct. Stokes retired from international cricket in June, shortly after an alcohol-related nightclub incident in London involving him and Gus Atkinson. Both players were subsequently left out of England's squad for the second Test against New Zealand while the ECB reviewed its alcohol policy. Stokes came back to lead in the third and final Test but announced his retirement midway. England went on to lose the Test match and the series.

Joe Root, who succeeded Stokes as Test captain, subsequently scrapped England's midnight curfew, saying the players were "grown adults" and should be trusted to make their own decisions. Root argued there was no need for a blanket alcohol ban and that the players could have "a sensible beer" at the right time while stressing that they also had to understand their responsibilities as England players.
