Jaiswal, Fernando slapped with fines after on-field altercation

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando have been fined 25 per cent of their match fees and handed one demerit point each following an on-field altercation on Day 1 of the second Test in Colombo.

The incident happened after Jaiswal was dismissed by Fernando in the 17th over of India's first innings. Fernando appeared to give the batter a send-off while celebrating with teammates, prompting Jaiswal to turn back and confront him. Both players made head contact before Sri Lankan players intervened and Jaiswal headed to the pavilion.

An ICC statement confirmed both players were found guilty of a Level 1 offence under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, relating to "inappropriate physical contact" during an international match.

Match referee Andy Pycroft's sanctions were accepted by both players, avoiding a formal hearing. This was the first demerit point for each player in the last 24 months. Accumulating four or more demerit points within that period results in suspension points and a match ban.

Jaiswal had made a confident start before playing onto his stumps for 45 — the first of Fernando's four wickets so far. India ended Day 2 on 475/8, with play interrupted by rain.
