WTC scenarios: India in tricky territory after drawn Colombo Test

Sri Lanka held on to a draw in the second Test at Colombo SSC as the series ended 1-0 in India's favour. Bangladesh's 1-1 series in Australia and India's 1-0 win in Sri Lanka have significantly impacted the World Test Championship standings as the fourth cycle enters its third phase. For context, South Africa and Australia qualified for the last final with 69.44% and 67.54% respectively, while Australia and India contested the 2023 final with 66.67% and 58.80%.

WTC points table after SL vs Ind, Colombo SSC

Team Mat Won Lost Draw Points PCT
Aus 10 8 2 0 96 80.00%
SA 4 3 1 0 36 75.00%
NZ 6 4 1 1 52 72.22%
Ban 6 3 2 1 40 55.56%
Ind 11 5 4 2 68 51.52%
SL 6 1 2 3 24 33.33%
Eng 14 5 8 1 50 29.76%
WI 12 2 8 2 30 20.83%
Pak 7 2 5 0 16 19.05%

Here's what each team in contention needs to do to progress.

Australia

Series left: SA (3 Tests, away); NZ (4 Tests, home); Ind (5 Tests, away)

Australia top the table with 80% PCT despite the defeat to Bangladesh in Darwin. They are best placed to qualify with 12 Tests remaining, eight of which are in South Africa and India. Six wins and a draw will take them past 65%; seven wins plus a draw pushes them closer to 70%, which should confirm a top-two finish.

South Africa

Series left: Aus (3 Tests, home); Ban (2 Tests, home); Eng (3 Tests, home); SL (2 Tests, away)

South Africa have all eight of their remaining home Tests in the cycle, though six are against Australia and England. They won three of four Tests before their Sri Lanka series. Six wins and a draw takes them to 66.67%; seven wins pushes them past 70%, likely enough for a spot at The Oval next June.

New Zealand

Series left: Ind (2 Tests, home); Pak (2 Tests, away); Aus (4 Tests, away); SL (2 Tests, home)

New Zealand sit third at 72.22% after wins over West Indies at home and England away. Winning both home series—against India and Sri Lanka, neither of whom have won in New Zealand in 15 years—plus two away wins would take them near 65%. Seven wins from ten would give them 70.83%.

Bangladesh

Series left: SA (2 Tests, away); WI (2 Tests, home); Eng (2 Tests, home)

Bangladesh are enjoying their best WTC campaign, sitting fourth ahead of India, England, and Sri Lanka. Four of their six remaining Tests are at home against non-Asian sides. With the fewest matches left among contenders, every result carries extra weight. Four wins and two draws reach 66.67%; four wins and two defeats give 61.11%.

India

Series left: NZ (2 Tests, away); Aus (5 Tests, home)

The Colombo draw means India took only 16 of 24 possible points from Sri Lanka, leaving them fifth at 51.52%. Winning all seven remaining Tests gets them to 70.37%. Six wins and a defeat takes them near 65%, which would dent Australia's hopes in their five-Test home series. A 0-2 loss in New Zealand followed by a 5-0 home sweep over Australia would leave them at 59.26%, requiring other results to go their way.

Sri Lanka

Series left: Pak (2 Tests, away); NZ (2 Tests, away); SA (2 Tests, home)

The hard-fought SSC draw lifted spirits but gave Sri Lanka just four points from 24 available against India. They have only one home series left in three remaining rubbers. Winning all six remaining matches would take them only to 66.67%, and they would still need significant help elsewhere.

England, Pakistan & West Indies

All three have negligible chances of a top-two finish. Their maximum possible PCTs—53.17%, 56.41%, and 32.14% respectively—would almost certainly not suffice.
