Saim Ayub ton secures crucial win for Kingsmen

A century from Saim Ayub set up an 11-run win for the Jamaica Kingsmen over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at Basseterre on Thursday. Needing 31 runs from the final over, Dasun Shanaka struck three sixes to keep the Patriots in the hunt, but Odean Smith held his nerve to close out the win. With just one win from five games, the Patriots remained at the bottom of the points table while the Kingsmen moved up to fourth place.

After opting to bowl first, Naseem Shah removed both the Kingsmen openers cheaply. Just as they were attempting to rebuild, Wanindu Hasaranga ended a 31-run stand between Ayub and Kirk McKenzie by dismissing the latter just after the Powerplay. When Usman Khan fell two overs later, caught brilliantly by Hasaranga, the Kingsmen found themselves in a spot of bother at 63 for 4.

The acceleration began with Ayub smashing Waqar Salamkheil for 21 runs in the 14th over. He brought up his fifty with a six over deep mid-wicket before hitting two more later in the over. That opened the floodgates, with the next two overs yielding 11 and 12 runs respectively. Hasaranga returned to break the 71-run stand by dismissing Powell in the 17th over, but Ayub carried on, bringing up his maiden T20 century with a six in the 19th over. He fell off the very next delivery, but the Kingsmen finished strongly on 182 for 7, with the last three overs yielding 42 runs.

A sharp shower delayed the start of the chase. When play resumed, the Powerplay did not go according to plan for the Patriots as they lost three wickets while scoring just 42. Things did not improve after the fielding restrictions eased, with the Patriots struggling to break free against disciplined bowling. When Mikyle Louis fell in the 11th over, the Patriots found themselves in a hole at 64 for 4.

Andre Fletcher briefly broke free, striking a flurry of boundaries to bring up his fifty in the 14th over. However, he wasn't able to carry on and returned a catch to Ayub two overs later. Needing 64 to win from the last three overs, Jason Holder and Dasun Shanaka raised the hopes of an unlikely turnaround with a 24-run over. A brilliant 19th over from Hunain Shah, in which he also bowled Holder, tilted the odds back in the Kingsmen's favour. Shanaka then began a nervy 20th over with two sixes but managed only one more blow from the next four balls as the Patriots finished on 171 for 6.
