West Indies captain Shai Hope is urging his squad to prioritize consistency as they prepare for a challenging tour of India, aiming to bridge the significant gap between their current form and the top-ranked hosts.

The Consistency Struggle
Hope, reflecting on his own early career in India, acknowledges the team's erratic performance. Since 2025, the West Indies have won only one of seven bilateral series, resulting in a 27.27% win rate—the second lowest in the world. This inconsistency has left them ranked 10th globally, forcing them to play World Cup Qualifiers rather than qualifying automatically.

"Consistency is the biggest thing for us. We've seen great sparks from different series and from different people in West Indies cricket," Hope said. "It's about repeating that, trying to get those performances rather than one or two games, just try to extend that for two, three, four series."

Historical Baggage and Current Context
The West Indies have not won an ODI series in India since 2002. Since 2006, India has won every series between the two sides. Hope admits these statistics are a "harsh reality" but views the current tour as a "great indicator" of the team's standing.

"When you're playing internationally, you want to play against the best. When you’ve got India in home conditions, then you get a real test," Hope noted.

Batting Concerns: The Top Order
A major weakness for the tourists is the top order. Since the 2023 World Cup, West Indies openers have the lowest average (23.4) among all teams, having used eight different opening batters and 11 separate pairs.

• Shai Hope: Has moved down the order, a switch that has benefited his personal game but left the top half unsettled.
• Emerging Talent: Aside from Hope and Keacy Carty, no core batter has played 30+ ODIs.

Hope emphasizes the need for adaptation to Indian conditions, noting that the approach must differ from Australia or the Caribbean. He acknowledges the team's inability to follow up exceptional performances, citing the recent New Zealand series where they slipped from a 1-0 lead to losing three in a row.

Despite the "tough, uphill battle" of reversing historical trends, Hope believes the team has bridged the gap by 19-20 points from the 8th or 9th-ranked teams.

"We are showing signs, but if you want to be the best, No.1, No.2, No.3, you've got to do it more consistently," Hope concluded.
