What CSK are getting with Zaheer Khan

Zaheer Khan’s Journey: From MI’s Behind‑the‑Scenes Strategist to CSK’s Head Coach

Learning the Ropes at Mumbai Indians (2019‑2024)

• Mentoring Rasikh Salam – In the 2019 IPL final, a young Rasikh sat beside Zaheer in the MI dugout. Zaheer used the moments to teach him how to read an over, ask tactical “what‑if” questions, and develop a cricketing mindset.
• Analytical Role – As Director of Cricket Operations, Zaheer contributed to MI’s scouting and opposition analysis. He worked closely with head coach Mahela Jayawardene and fielding specialist James Pamment.
• Bowling Strategy – Zaheer’s insights on bowling plans, especially against key opposition batsmen, were praised for their depth. He collaborated with bowling coach Shane Bond and fast‑bowler Trent Boult on left‑arm tactics.
• Team Cohesion – During the COVID‑hit 2020 season in Dubai, Zahrer organised group activities (sundowners, dinners) to keep the bubble‑bound squad united.
• Player Development – He helped fringe players like Jayant Yadav stay positive and prepared for limited opportunities, emphasizing clear role communication.

“He never overstepped the mark,” recalls James Pamment, noting Zaheer’s preference for one‑on‑one guidance over grand speeches.

Transition to Chennai Super Kings (2027)

• New Role – Zaheer steps into the head‑coach position at CSK, replacing the long‑standing coach who held the job for 18 years.
• Key Relationships – His prior rapport with MS Dhoni and the existing bond with Ruturaj Gaikwad are expected to aid squad harmony.
• Challenges Ahead
  • CSK finished 10th in 2025 and 8th in 2026, so rebuilding team spirit and consistency is a priority.
  • As head coach, Zaheer will now make selection decisions and set the overall tactical direction, a step up from his previous behind‑the‑scenes role.
• Coaching Philosophy – Known for staying positive, Zaheer is likely to maintain CSK’s culture of emotional restraint and clear role definitions, while injecting fresh tactical ideas.

“He always remained upbeat, even in tough seasons. That positivity will serve him well in Chennai,” says Pamment.

What to Watch in IPL 2027

• Group Unity – Expect Zaheer to focus on building a cohesive unit, leveraging his strength in personal mentorship.
• Tactical Evolution – His analytical background may bring new bowling plans and opposition‑specific strategies to CSK.
• Staff Collaboration – Success will depend on how effectively he aligns his coaching staff with his vision.

Zaheer Khan’s move from a supportive, analytical role at MI to the top coaching spot at CSK sets up an intriguing storyline for the upcoming IPL season.
