Dravid, Gilchrist, Morgan Ruled Out for MI Head Coach Role
With Mahela Jayawardene’s departure from the Mumbai Indians (MI) confirmed ahead of IPL 2027, speculation has swirled around potential successors. However, Cricbuzz has confirmed that Rahul Dravid, Adam Gilchrist, and Eoin Morgan are not in contention for the role.
- Rahul Dravid: The former India coach, who led the team to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, has ruled himself out for at least another season. Sources indicate he wishes to focus on his family and his sons’ careers. Despite receiving multiple offers after leaving Rajasthan Royals, Dravid has resisted IPL riches for now.
- Adam Gilchrist & Eoin Morgan: Both legends have been linked to the job but are unavailable and have communicated this to IPL management.
Current Candidates on the Radar
MI officials, who met on Friday evening to finalize Jayawardene’s exit, have not yet announced a clear frontrunner. The interview process is expected to begin soon. Key names currently being considered include:
- Mike Hussey: Recently parted ways with Chennai Super Kings. He turned down an offer to join the England setup under Stephen Fleming and may be eyeing a role in Australia, but remains open to another IPL gig.
- Adrian Birrell: A highly sought-after coach who has guided Sunrisers Eastern Cape to three titles in four SA20 seasons and led Sunrisers Leeds Women to The Hundred final. He is currently head coach of Sharjah Warriorz in the ILT20 and is reportedly not interested in moving to the IPL, though MI could consider him if he changes his mind.
- Aaron Finch: The former Australia captain is believed to have held talks with several IPL teams, though it is unclear if he has engaged directly with MI.
Staff Retention
MI has left the decision to retain existing support staff to the incoming head coach. The current staff includes:
- Bowling: Lasith Malinga, Paras Mhambrey
- Batting: Kieron Pollard
- Fielding: Carl Hopkinson
Contracts for these staff members have either expired or are due to end within the next couple of months.
Jayawardene’s Legacy
Mahela Jayawardene served as MI’s head coach across two stints (2017–2022 and 2024–2026), helming the team to three of their five IPL titles (2017, 2019, 2020).
- Nita Ambani: "His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us."
- Mahela Jayawardene: "I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead."
