Sameen Rana Eyes BPL Opportunity for Lahore Qalandars
Sameen Rana, co-owner and COO of Lahore Qalandars, has expressed interest in entering the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) if a viable business opportunity arises.
Rana made the comments after spending time with BCB President Tamim Iqbal at the Sheikh Abu Jayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi during Bangladesh’s tri-series opener against Zimbabwe.
Key Points:
- BPL Interest: Rana stated, “If there’s an opportunity, I would love to be part of the BPL… Bangladesh is very close to my heart.” He believes the league’s current struggles are unnecessary given the passion for cricket in both Bangladesh and Pakistan, and hopes to create a "win-win" situation.
- Experience Sharing: Rana highlighted his 11 years of involvement in the PSL, along with experience in the Global League (South Africa), T10 cricket, and Cricket Canada. He noted that he and Tamim Iqbal discussed sharing these insights to improve franchise cricket operations.
- Player Exchange Programme: Rana proposed establishing a player exchange programme with the BCB. This would allow Bangladeshi cricketers to train at the Lahore Qalandars’ High Performance Centre in Islamabad.
- He cited recent agreements with Guyana (Ministry of Youth and Culture) and a six-week training stint for eight Zimbabwean players as precedents for such initiatives.
- Existing Ties: Lahore Qalandars already enjoy a strong following in Bangladesh, with former players including Shakib Al Hasan, Rishad Hossain, and Mustafizur Rahman having represented the franchise in the PSL.
