Data Shorts: A dubious matchup that backfired
In T20 cricket, it's a tactical norm to avoid pairing a finger spinner with a same-handed batter. The data supports this: since 2023 in the IPL, right-handers in the top seven have struck at 148 against right-arm off-spin, while left-handers score at 134. Conversely, left-handers strike at 149.41 against left-arm orthodox, and right-handers at 131.96.
Ahead of their match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals had the tournament's best economy rate, under nine runs per over. However, influenced by opponents and conditions, they altered their bowling lineup, replacing Aquib Nabi with Nitish Rana.
SRH's top order had been vulnerable to new-ball specialists in two of their three losses this season. DC's lineup is built to bowl at least eight overs of spin per game with Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Since 2025, 46.2% of their overs have been bowled by spinners, a rate only surpassed by Kolkata Knight Riders (46.7%). This strategy is less effective in Hyderabad, where spinners in night games since 2025 average 78.22 with an economy of 9.8, compared to pacers' average of 22.63 and economy of 9.35.
Axar Patel, often used with the new ball, had a favorable record against SRH's Abhishek Sharma: 6 runs off 8 balls with two dismissals. Despite this, DC captain Rishabh Pant chose part-time off-spinner Nitish Rana to bowl against two left-handers. Abhishek's strike-rate against spin since 2024 is 212.68, and 177.48 specifically against right-arm off-break. Ishan Kishan, if an early wicket fell, has strike-rates of 184.72 against spin and 175.75 against off-break.
Rana's first over conceded only six runs. But DC overused the tactic, bringing him back for the fifth over, where he was hit for three sixes, two by Abhishek. Axar eventually broke the 97-run opening stand in the ninth over, but an expensive over from Kuldeep Yadav later may have confused DC's plans. They brought Rana back in the 15th over, which yielded 23 runs. He finished with figures of 0/55 from four overs, while Axar and Kuldeep had overs left unused.
This was only the second time Rana has bowled four overs in an IPL innings. In the match, he bowled exclusively to left-handers, who scored 53 runs off his deliveries (excluding wides). Abhishek alone smashed 45 off 15 balls (strike-rate 286.66) against him, making it the only instance in IPL history where a left-hander has scored over 35 runs off a right-arm off-spinner in a single game.
The irony is that Nitish Rana, as a left-handed batter, has historically excelled against right-arm off-spin. Among 41 left-handers facing at least 100 such deliveries in IPL history, his strike-rate of 159.7 is third-highest, behind only Abhishek Sharma and Sunil Narine. Against Ravichandran Ashwin, Rana has scored 141 off 71 balls with one dismissal (strike-rate 198.59)—the highest run tally at the best strike-rate in any player-versus-player matchup in 19 years of the IPL.
While Kuldeep had one costly over, his economy against right and left-handers in the Impact Player era is nearly identical (7.82 vs. 8.07). Axar remains a premier defensive bowler in T20s. On this night, DC's tactics appeared driven more by fear of their opponents than confidence in their own strengths.
