Bangladesh Cricket Board – Tamim Iqbal & CWAB Meeting (Sep 1)
- What: Tamim Iqbal (BCB President) will meet the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) at Sher‑e‑Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
- Why: Follow‑up to a stalled discussion on Aug 30 regarding the future of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Key Issues
| Issue | Board’s Position | Players’ Reaction |
|---|---|---|
| BPL 2024 | Not hosting the tournament until structural and financial problems are solved. | Players see this as a major income loss; many demand an alternative competition. |
| Alternative tournament | Offer to run the National Cricket League (NCL) T20 with higher match fees. | Fee increase would only cover ~20 % of a typical BPL earnings (≈ BDT 80 lakh for top players, ~ BDT 40 lakh for A‑grade). |
| Franchise stance | Some franchises willing to postpone the BPL for a “reformed” edition. | Players remain skeptical, preferring immediate earnings over future promises. |
Notable Quote (anonymised player)
“We understand the need to plan for the future, but the present financial reality cannot be ignored. A decision that sacrifices today’s earnings for tomorrow’s brand value feels unfair to us.”
Implications for Tamim Iqbal
- Leadership test: Maintaining player support while pushing long‑term reforms.
- Potential risk: If relations with the players deteriorate, BCB’s internal cohesion could suffer, impacting future cricket administration.
