Maharashtra vs Jharkhand, Ranji Trophy 2026-27: Match Preview

Match Details

Overview

Maharashtra will host Jharkhand in their second-round Elite Group C encounter at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. The match, scheduled from October 18 to 21, 2026, forms part of the opening phase of the 92nd edition of India's premier domestic first-class competition.

Both teams enter the fixture looking to build momentum after their Group C openers, which saw them pick up crucial first-lead points on October 11.

Recent Form

Maharashtra

Maharashtra began their campaign on a positive note, defeating Services by 127 runs in their opening Group C match at Palam A Stadium, Delhi. That result placed them among the stronger performers in Group C's opening round, alongside Vidarbha, who posted a commanding 160-run win over Puducherry.

Led by Prithvi Shaw, Maharashtra boast a well-balanced squad featuring a mix of experience and youth. Their batting lineup includes the dangerous opening combination of Prithvi Shaw and Sachin Dhas, with Digvijay Patil and Ankeet Bawane providing depth in the middle order. The bowling attack is anchored by Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Mukesh Choudhary, supported by Harshal Kate and Siddhesh Veer. Wicketkeeper Saurabh Navale adds valuable all-round capability.

Jharkhand

Jharkhand's opening match against Kerala at Keenan Stadium, Jamshedpur, ended in a draw — a result that, while not adding to their points tally, demonstrated their resilience on the pitch.

Captain Virat Singh leads a side that combines domestic know-how with emerging talent. The batting core includes Sahil Raj, Aryaman Sen, and Sharandeep Singh, while Shikhar Mohan and Shresht Sagar offer supporting fire. Jharkhand's bowling options are led by Utkarsh Singh and Amit Kumar, with all-rounders Md. Kounain Quraishi and Sushant Mishra providing crucial balance.

Key Players to Watch

• Prithvi Shaw (Maharashtra, Captain) — An aggressive top-order batter, Shaw's intent-setting approach at the top will be crucial on a venue that historically offers something for the bat.

• Virat Singh (Jharkhand, Captain) — A dependable all-rounder and leader, Singh will look to steer both the batting order and contribute with the ball.

• Rajvardhan Hangargekar (Maharashtra) — The left-arm pacer provides early movement and can exploit the home conditions.

• Sahil Raj (Jharkhand) — A key batter in the middle order whose ability to anchor and accelerate could prove decisive.

Venue and Conditions

The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune has generally been a batting-friendly surface that offers assistance to fast bowlers early on, before settling down for the batters. Teams that win the toss may be inclined to bat first and establish a lead, particularly given the importance of building pressure in a group-stage fixture.

What's at Stake

As one of the Group C openers, this fixture carries significance in the early points-table race. With Group C featuring strong contenders such as Bengal, Gujarat, Odisha, and Services, every point matters as teams jockey for position in the hunt for a knockout berth. The group's top finishers, along with the runners-up, will eye qualification for the quarterfinals, which are scheduled for February 9-13, 2027.

For Maharashtra, a win would consolidate their early standing, while Jharkhand will aim to convert their opening draw into a points-winning performance on the road.
